Leavenworth Eryngium (Eryngium leavenworthii), Apiaceae (Carrot Family)
We are going to try something new this year.
Over the course of three days we will travel from Fort Smith, and the confluence of the Poteau River with the Arkansas, to Fort Towson, and the confluence of the Kiamichi River with the Red.
This route crosses three ecoregions and the entire north-south range of the Choctaw Nation.
You can sign up to go on all three days, or take any one or two of the trips separately.
  • The first leg will be on Saturday April 25, 2020. We will explore Fort Smith and the Fort Smith area prairies on through the Poteau River Valley to the Poteau River bottoms near Lake Wister.
  • The second trip will be on Saturday May 16, 2020. This Ouachita Mountains segment we will begin on the top of Winding Stair and explore from there through the middle Kiamichi River Valley down to Antlers.
  • The third leg of our Nuttall explorations will be on Saturday May 30, 2020. We will begin at Antlers and explore the lower Kiamichi and the Red River valley where Nuttall spent several weeks botanizing after being left there by the Army.
Kiamichi Technology Center in Poteau will once again be our host. A box lunch and bus transportation will be provided.
The bus will leave from KTC for all trips & return there. But for Trips 2 & 3 we will pick you along the way if you live closer. You can join us at our first stop on the Talimena Drive for Trip 2, or in Antlers at our first stop for Trip 3.
Even if you joined us in previous years, come travel with us again as we include new stops and continue to explore the ecology and history of this beautiful region!
