TRACING THE STEPS OF THOMAS NUTTALL THROUGH THE POTEAU RIVER VALLEY

TRACING THE STEPS OF THOMAS NUTTALL THROUGH THE POTEAU RIVER VALLEY–a one-day personal enrichment class offered by Kiamichi Technology Center, Poteau OK. Thomas Nuttall arrived at Fort Smith, located at the confluence of the Poteau River with the Arkansas River, on April 24, 1819. He spent several days exploring the area with the garrison as his base.

On Saturday April 29, 2017, we will trace Nuttall’s path through the Poteau River valley. We will visit places he described and see how the landscape has changed and what remains the same. We’ll see prairie remnants and current efforts at prairie restoration as well as riparian (stream-side) vegetation. If you are interested in the natural and cultural history of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas please plan to join us. To register for the class, contact Nina Morgan at KTC (918-647-5418).
